Design, Details, and Craftsmanship

Ross Peters is an artist and woodworker located in Oakland, CA. He graduated from Cal Poly in 2011 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. After 3.5 years of working as an engineer he decided to change careers to pursue his passion of woodworking. Up to that point he had mostly been self-taught in woodworking, and so decided to take classes in the Wood Technology program at Laney College in Oakland. These classes advanced his skills and knowledge significantly, and allowed him to learn how a real woodworking shop operates.

Today Ross has his own shop space at Artthaus Studios in Oakland. He has turned the studio into a fully equipped woodworking shop with all the tools and space necessary to build just about anything.

Ross likes to build his projects out of sustainably sourced local hardwoods. Walnut, White Oak, and Ash make frequent appearances in his work. He likes to highlight the natural beauty of the material, usually avoiding stains and paints in favor of clear natural finishes that let you appreciate the natural colors of the wood. When the wood has knots and cracks he generally chooses to stabilize and showcase them, rather than trying to hide the imperfections or waste the material altogether.
